Helen Zarin hails from the ancient metropolis of Shiraz, Persia, which is home to poets, writers, architects, gardens, world famous pistachios, and the internationally acclaimed Shiraz red wine grapes.   Helen grew up as an Orthodox Jew in a Muslim land. This presented her with many challenges and difficulties. Helen can remember beginning to paint at the early age of five. Showing talent, her influential family encouraged her to invest in her artistic endeavors. As a high school student, she studied with the well-known Persian artist and teacher, Saber. Later she enrolled in the Art and Culture Society, a national organization for gifted Persian artists. As a student of art and culture, she refined her skills in the various mediums, especially pastels and oils. Helen was recognized by the Iranian Society and earned many national awards for her works. Conditions in her native country eventually compelled Helen to turn elsewhere for creative nourishment. “Hard work and talent are not enough for an artist to progress and blossom; creative freedom in the right atmosphere is essential”, she remarked. In the pursuit of these artistic prerequisites, she journeyed first to Europe where she displayed her works in Vienna before coming to the US in 1993 Helen has acquired a worldwide following of collectors. In 2014 her work was included in an exhibition at the Mizel Judaic Museum in Denver Colorado and hung with the works of Marc Chagall and other notable Jewish artists.              Helen brings to the gallery a body of new work which will include her concept of dance, music, abstracts, flowers and atmospheric landscapes. Eleanor Roosevelt: The Power of Words presented by Storysmith® Susan Frontczak In this living history presentation, audiences will gain a glimpse into Eleanor Roosevelt’s life and hear the heartfelt story of the little girl who lost both parents before the age of ten, a debutante who felt trapped by society’s expectations, and a young wife who raised five children before emerging as one of the 20th century’s most remarkable women. From the words of her father that gave her strength to the famous words spoken by her husband that helped lift an entire nation during the Great Depression, Eleanor Roosevelt knew how well-chosen words could bring attention to a topic, awaken understanding, and bring a listener to a new point of view. In this intimate gathering, a costumed Eleanor Roosevelt will deliver a powerful monologue on diverse topics such as unemployment, race relations, honoring servicemen, economic ties with Mexico, wealth, and international relations. Mrs. Roosevelt includes a segment on how words misused can be harmful and hurtful to individuals, groups, or an entire nation. The program culminates with a look at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. [less-]

Seduction, courtship, love, heartbreak and surprise abound in this classic romantic comedy based on one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels. Aquila Theatre expands the canon of classical works for the stage by adapting this story in a bold and exciting new production featuring an innovative use of space, movement, design, and sound. The story revolves around the lives of two sisters – Elinor, who is level-headed and full of sense, and the hopelessly romantic Marianne – who live in a world in which choices are limited, especially for women. After the untimely and unexpected death of their father, both sisters and their mother are forced to leave their comfortable lives while their half-brother and his wife inherit the family estate. As these sisters are left to fend for themselves, it seems the only hope is a profitable marriage. Directed by Desiree Sanchez.   [less-]

Delight in The Mikado, a two-act comedic opera performed by the Gilbert & Sullivan Players, unlike anything you’ve seen before. The story of The Mikado revolves around Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado of Japan, who has fled his father’s imperial court. Disguised as a traveling musician in Titipu, he finds himself in love with a beautiful young lady named Yum-Yum who is unfortunately engaged to be married to her guardian, Ko-Ko. When he hears that Ko-Ko has been condemned to death, he hastily returns to Titipu to claim his love but soon learns that Ko-Ko has not only been granted a reprieve, but has been promoted to the post of Lord High Executioner. Wishing to slow down the rash of executions, Titipu’s leaders reason that since Ko-Ko was next in line for execution, he can't cut off anyone else's head until he cuts off his own. Ko-Ko, desperate to avoid cutting off his own head, vows to find a substitute, and as luck would have it, a heart-broken Nanki-Poo has declared he would rather die than live life without his beloved. Ko-Ko immediately offers Nanki-Poo one month of luxurious living at the end of which he will be relatively painlessly decapitated. Nanki-Poo agrees on the one condition that he be married to Yum-Yum right away so that he can spend his last month in wedded bliss. But just as the wedding celebration begins, a law is discovered that shocks everyone! [less-]

[less-]

What is power2give.org?

It’s Tampa Bay’s new funding platform for local arts organizations! The concept is simple: Nonprofit organizations list needs for a specific project – for example, costumes for an upcoming show or instruments for undeserved children. Visitors to the site choose the project that matches their interests or touches their hearts and make a donation. The donation may be as little as $5 but that very important contribution supports local arts and enables creativity to flourish.
With tools and resources for both donors and cultural organizations, power2give.org makes posting, donating and promoting projects convenient and engaging. On power2give, all gifts are processed even if the project only receives partial funding. Unlike some crowd funding sites, you keep the money you raise whether you hit your target or not. Projects are listed on the site for a maximum of 90 days, or until they meet their financial goals.

Who can post projects?

You may post a project if:

  • You represent a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts and cultural organization located in Hillsborough or Pinellas Counties that has been registered as a charitable organization with the State of Florida for at least one year at the time of posting
  • You are authorized to post projects on behalf of the 501(c)3 that you represent
  • You hold a valid solicitation agreement in the State of Florida (If you are a professional solicitor, you are registered with the State of Florida and have a valid solicitation agreement with the 501(c)3 that you represent.)
  • You can provide a copy of the organization’s 2012 990 IRS Form

Project Requirements

  • Project funding will be used only for the intended purpose you state on the site
  • Projects posted to the site will only be related to arts and culture organizations
  • Project request amounts will not exceed $10,000.
